Mario Bros USB

Mario Bros USB

gizmodo.com ~ With 8GB flash drives available for under $20 and 32GB drives edging into the mainstream, nobody can blame you for shelving old USB sticks. But there are a surprising number of uses for those rickety, sub-gigabyte keychains.

There are nearly endless ways to bring a USB stick out of retirement, and they’re not just gimmicks: virtually all USB sticks, 32MB USB 1.1 dinosaurs included, can be repurposed into anything from a lifesaving troubleshooting tool to an entire portable OS.

NY Times ~ A while ago, reports of executions — one postponed in Ohio, one carried out in Texas — punctuated the news more frequently than usual. These reports prompted me to reflect on an archive of executed prisoners’ last words I found on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Web site while researching parole terms. The archive’s earliest entry dates from Dec. 7, 1982; the most recent was added after Stephen Moody was executed on Wednesday by lethal injection for murder. What follows are quotations taken from inmates’ last statements in Texas. The statements, delivered before family members, relatives of victims, friends and the press, are compiled out of chronological order.

Few tools for a cooler/healthier PC.

Posted by Lou On October - 20 - 20092 COMMENTS

Reading through so many blogs and articles a day, I always come across really interesting applications that help with computer maintenance or just make my life a lot better. I’ve compiled a list of these tools along with a brief summary of how they can help you out.

AVG 9.0

AVG 9.0

1. AVG : Freeware : 80 million PCers use this nifty little application. AVG is THE top of the line anti virus and it comes equipped with an anti spyware and a link scanner. Antispyware is all those pop ups you get and those random applications you always catch floating around your machine and a link scanner does that exactly, ensures every web page you visit is safe – even before you go there. Another cool thing they have, that they don’t mention, is an email scanner. Scans every email sent to you and by you. Definitely something 90% of the people I know should get. “It’s always been our philosophy at AVG that everyone has the right to basic computer security at no charge.” AMEN!

You're only good if Morrow says so.

You're only good if Morrow says so.

2. Microsoft Security (codename: MORRO) : Freeware : This is “basically” the same thing as AVG. Only difference is the Microsoft logo. For those of you not trusting a name that you’ve never seen before, trust these guys. It includes the ability to schedule and customize scans and exclude particular files, file locations, or processes. It remains to be seen whether this aspiring application will proove to deliver more of a punch to common viruses and malware than off-the-shelf solutions, or AVG. I haven’t used this yet but I’m definitely gonna give it a shot. What I did read somewhere is that, unlike other anti viruses, this one doesn’t work well with others. That’s Microsoft for ya, always trying to be the best at everything. If you guys have feedback on this program, go ahead and post some comments, before I download it.

Tech Tracker

Tech Tracker

3. Tech Tracker : Freeware : TechTracker utilizes CNET Downloads, the most comprehensive and trusted database of software products and updates IN THE WORLD. What it does is scan your PC (or MAC) and let you know what updates you need to make to what programs. Sure you do Windows updates every night but that doesn’t mean that all your applications are running at it’s best, and as fast as they should. It’s free now, but when everyone starts realizing how important these updates are, these types of programs are going to be rather expensive. Take advantage now of the FREE and of he fact it’s coming from one of the top leading companies.

Now for the fun ones. YAY!

Flag Tab for FIREFOX!

Flag Tab for FIREFOX!

4. Flag Tab : Freeware : For those of you that are FireFox Tab whores, like myself, this is the add-on you’ve been waiting for and didn’t even know it. I constantly have two open FireFox windows and have about 5 tabs in each. It’s just the way I work and check my emails and Facebook and search for things. Sometimes I’ll find something great in one of the superstar blogs I read and want to post it on Facebook, or antisteez and I’m looking for a while for the tab that I need. Ok, fine. Maybe I’m searching for 10 seconds but my time is priceless, mainly cause I’ve never put a price sticker on it. Maybe I’ll consider making one in the future but for now, Flag Tab will do. It labels your tabs by color. And it’s incredible. Ok?

I <3 this app.

5. Fences : Freeware : I know all of you that have ever thought a computer can literally do anything have come across a company named Stardock. Stardock, specializes in programs that let you optimize the look and feel of your whole Windows Interface. This program is brought to you by Stardock. It makes these cool, totally optimizing, windows that you can put your desktop icons on. Label each window whatever you want. Coolest thing is, when you want, you double click on your desktop and all the icons, including your Recycle Bin, disappear. If you’ve read at least a little bit on anything, you’ll know that the graphic for an icon will take up a bit of memory. That said, if you have 86754 icons on your desktop, it will slow your machine down a bit when minimizing to view your desktop. Awesome program.

6. XPIZE : Freeware : One simple little thing that not many people realize about the computer you use. Every thing you see is an image, and can be updated. The start menu isn’t a green or blue button because Daddy Gates made it that way and that is all. It is that way because they think it looks better that color. Well, WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY?!? Make it purple with yellow polka dots if you want, using this program. I refuse to have a blue task bar just because the man up in Microsoft heaven like it that way. I’m a rebel, and I want a fucking RED task bar. Got it? This one had too many screenshots of too many different options. Go to the site and check them out. This one looks fun.

They’re all free. Read a bit, you won’t regret downloading these programs. I promise.

OHHH Google, how I love thee.

One AMAZING thing about Google that not many people recognize, but gives me an e-boner, are the useless little add-ons they come up with. They grab something as good as gmail, per say, and throw one itsy bitsy line of code, that makes this one itsy bitsy new sentence pop up and you don’t even realize it, until it saves you from sending a picture of your new nipple ring to mom accidentally.

We’ve all gone through the scare of sending an email to someone that shouldn’t be reading it. Not anymore. Google done hooked us up and they deserve a pat in the back for it.

I’m not THIS bad.

iPhones, Finally Joining the Caravan.

Posted by Lou On September - 23 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

AT&T writes to Gizmodo.com:

An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility Customers

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.

We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.

We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

Darth Vaders mask. Inside look.

So if I’m not mistaken, this mask is to help him breathe. With all the technology put into this mask and all the gadgets and shit, dude still has a respiratory problem? I sure hope this isn’t the future. I smoke, I think I prefer the little vocoder machine that attaches to your throat. It just sounds cooler. Also, I would probably want to work with Kraftwerk if I did have it. ::dream::

I’ve seen bongs made out of N64 and NES controllers, and both were amazing. But a bong made out of an Xbox 360? Oh hell yes.

As you can see by the photo below, this is a serious piece of custom-made weed smoking equipment. Sure, it won’t play Fallout 3, but it’ll make playing Fallout 3 on a functioning Xbox a lot more fun.

Now if someone wants to make a grinder or a stash box out of a controller to match this thing, you’d have the most epic and nerdy smoking setup ever. It’s AWESOME!. Anyone else have homemade gaming-related paraphernalia? Send it to me! I love this shit.
