[Podcast]: DJ Guilletine presents 1997 Hiphop podcast 90shiphopbanner

All sorts of crews and record labels in Hiphop by 1997. I think this is the year that money REALLY started to accumulate. Bad Boy, Death Row, multi-million dollar empires filled with the music that will be remembered forever. Tupac passed away late ’96 and Biggie passed away early this year, so I’m guessing Hiphop felt that they needed to step it up and come super strong. Grab the formulas they had discovered from Big and Pac and made it their own. This is how the legends were produced.

So, I leave you with the seventh mix Guilletine and Antisteez brings you, to showcase the “Golden Years of Hiphop”. Hopefully you all show as much love as you have for the past ones.

Enjoy and Re-share!!

[Podcast] DJ Guilletine presents MF DOOM podcast MF DOOM Banner

MF DOOM was probably one of the first requests we ever received when Guilletine started the podcast. Knowing the amount of tunes the man has, and how all you die hard DOOM fans were going to react at the fact that we might have left your favorite track out of the list, we might have procrastinated a tad bit. About a month ago though, we decided to start working on the track list.

MF DOOM, DOOM, King Geedorah, Metal Face, Metal Fingers, Viktor Vaughn, Zev Love X… The dude has multiple faces and I think we do a very descent job showing you a bit of every character he’s created throughout the years. Only thing we left out PURPOSELY was KMD and that’s because we spoke about a special little something we’re doing there… So sit tight for that one.

Big Daddy Kane, B.D.K., Dark Gable, King Asiatic Nobody’s Equal, Blackanova, Count Macula is one of the smoothest rappers to ever hit the radio. A flow and wordplay that most rapers have always and still look up to. Classics for days. And let’s not forget the “sexy” pics he took for Playgirl.

This week Big Daddy Kane hits the podcast and it’s definitely something no one wants to miss. As always Guilletine tears up the mix in an attempt to give everyone a brief history lesson. Go give him a high-5.

[Podcast] DJ Guilletine presents RAKIM podcast Rakim Banner

Nothing much to say about one who calls himself The Master. Rakim has been labeled by most likely everyone and their neighbor, as the dopest MC to ever play the game. That’s right kiddies… Not Jay… not Nas… not even Weezy (even if dumb ass Nicki Minaj did call him the greatest rapper alive). Rakim is the one all these rappers look up to and is still alive to prove it, Nicki.

We all danced around and wrote on walls to all his classics Eric B and Rakim would release. Last album they recorded together was Paid In Full, which led Eric B to not wanna sign the release from MGA in fear that Rakim would leave him solo. After a ton of court battles between Rakim, Eric and MGA… Rakim left him solo to go and record three MORE classic albums including work by Premier, Pete Rock and every other God Hiphop has to offer.

Rakim is most likely the MC with the most homage and tributes written specifically for him. And we all owe him some thanks. So sit back and listen to our way of saying “Thank You!”

Another history lesson is in session ladies and gentlemen, by none other than DJ Guilletine himself. Every now and again, Guilletine likes to keep you guys on your toes and bring you the tunes that actually inspired your favorite songs to be be born. The tunes that the someone listened to, learned and re-produced… Which then became one of your all time favorite songs.

Now, I personally enjoy the sampling more than anything when we talk about making music. I like playing a little game called Guess That Sample. I’ve been able to point out each and every one of these in some of my top songs. If you’re able to also, go ahead and comment and let us know.

[Podcast]: DJ Guilletine presents MC Seven Star podcast MC Seven Star Banner

I saw MC Seven Star perform for the first (and definitely not last) time, back in ’04. He shared a stage with some homeys of mine, Soul What. After the performance, I needed to go up to this dude and buy his album. That album was My Mother and Father Were Astronauts. Thanks to that day and Seven Star, I grew such strong love for the local Hiphop scene. Till this day, I still own the actual album and I’ve purchased all his other albums since then. He’s worked with tons of really dope artists and has some of Miami’s top producers working with him on making those dope beats.

Thanks to our homeys Manuvers, a lot of these tracks might be something some of you have never heard. So, take a listen to one of the individuals that helped me appreciate the Miami underground Hiphop scene.

[Podcast]: DJ Guilletine presents 1996 Hiphop

[Podcast]: DJ Guilletine presents 1996 Hiphop podcast 90shiphopbanner

In 1996 I was 14 years old. This is when I started piecing together the fact that I could save the lunch money I got throughout the week, jump on some dirty ass public bus over the weekend, head to the nearest SPECS and buy a few CD’s. Two things happened at this time:

  1.  I started a collection of music that I would totally kill anyone over. (If anyone knows me personally, you know the amount of music I have.)
  2.  I started spending all my lunch money which led to this phenomenal physique that I sport oh, so well today.

1996 is when I REALLY started appreciating hip hop. ’96 is MY golden era of the genre.

This is when all the legends were REALLY making their mark on the game. The flashy MTV videos started. Wu-Tang had the respect they needed to continue dropping an album a year that would, without a question, go platinum. The inspiration any of the artists needed to REALLY shine came September of that year, when one of their favorite rappers (Tupac Shakur) was shot and killed. Outkast came out with an album that will forever be in our record collection as one of the first records to not care about following guidelines. And Jay-Z… Reasonable Doubt… Do I really have to continue?

I already called it.

GOLDEN ERA!

[Podcast] Guilletine presents Tanya Morgan podcast Tanya Morgan Banner

I love all of our podcasts. Obviously… but every now and again, one comes around, which makes me EXTRA excited. Todays Tanya Morgan one is one of those. I’ve been contemplating throwing a tracklisting to Guilletine for a while now. The other day I just got crazy, asked Carolina to hit up our homey Von Pea, get a drop and gave Guilletine all the music he needed to make this mix for everyone.

Von Pea and Donwill are Tanya Morgan… and ‘Tanya Morgan Is A Rap Group’. Been following them since ?uestlove co-signed their 2006 project named Moonlighting. Caught me instantly and a few years later became an honorary Brooklynati resident. (If you got that, kudos to you!)

Well, listen to this podcast if it’s the last thing you do and thank me later, y’all.
