Today is for the brave men and women who have fought for the red, white and blue and for me and for you.

Today is for the brave men and women who have fought for the red, white and blue and for me and for you.

In my lifetime I have had the honor of knowing many incredible people.

Famous, average, intelligent, gregarious, affable and humorous types that have filled my life with joy and laughter. Loving, warm and caring folks who have shared with me their homes and hearts and made me feel like I belonged. Near and far, my acquaintances with these people have, for the most part, cushioned my very existence and given me a far-better life than I could have ever hoped for.

But today is not about them.

Pfft. No Porn. HAH!

Wall Street Journal~Outgoing Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin is pushing for action in December on a plan to offer free, pornography-free wireless Internet service to all Americans, despite objections from the wireless industry and some consumer groups.

At its December meeting, the FCC could also consider new rules designed to speed up consideration of disputes between independent cable programmers and cable providers such as Time Warner Cable Inc. and Comcast Corp., which either refuse to carry some channels or put them on specialty tiers of service that cost subscribers more.

The agency also will ask for more feedback on its proposal to require programmers to sell their channels to cable operators individually instead of in bundles.

The free Internet plan is the most controversial issue the agency will tackle in December. Mr. Martin shelved plans to consider a wider variety of sticky issues pending at the agency, including a request by the Hollywood studios to hobble TVs and set-top boxes so studios can offer copy-protected theatrical releases sooner.

The proposal to allow a no-smut, free wireless Internet service is part of a proposal to auction off a chunk of airwaves. The winning bidder would be required to set aside a quarter of the airwaves for a free Internet service. The winner could establish a paid service that would have a fast wireless Internet connection. The free service could be slower and would be required to filter out pornography and other material not suitable for children. The FCC’s proposal mirrors a plan offered by M2Z Networks Inc., a start-up backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner John Doerr.

Consumer advocates have objected to the FCC’s proposed pornography filter, while the wireless industry has objected to the entire free Internet plan. To address concerns about the filter, the FCC is proposing that adults could opt out and access all Internet sites.

T-Mobile USA, in particular, has raised concerns. The Deutsche Telekom AG unit paid about $4 billion a few years ago for nearby airwaves and has complained that the free wireless Internet plan will likely result in interference for consumers of its new 3G wireless network. The FCC dismissed the company’s interference concerns this fall, although T-Mobile disagreed with that finding.

TroopTube

Since 2007, the Department of Defense has restricted overseas military personal from accessing a number of popular sites including YouTube and MySpace for reasons largely attributed to bandwidth usage and possible security issues. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Delve Networks has teamed with Military OneSource (a service of the Department of Defense) to launch TroopTube – a YouTube-like site that gives all active-duty military personnel and their families a place to share their videos online.

Obama and his Blackberry

Posted by Ariel On November - 17 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

I read a really interesting article on NYTimes.com about how President-elect Obama, who is an apparent Blackberry addict, might have to give up his beloved little device after he takes office in January. Apparently, by law all of the President’s correspondence is public record, including email and text messages. Just goes to show you that the leader of the free world has to sacrifice some of the freedoms we all take for granted.

change.gov

boingboing.net~Still wrapping my head around this, but it sure is interesting at first glance — in part because of the speed in which it was launched. Change.gov is a website launched by the Obama team’s Presidential Transition Project which documents the transition into power and solicits ideas from the public.

Yes We Can.

It’s Wednesday, November 5, 2008, and we have just elected the 44th president of the United States of America. The dust is just now settling as we come to a close of the long and exhausting Presidential campaigns that have been fought so diligently by both candidates, and Sen. Barack Obama has just been named America’s next President. It’s evident that emotions are running high both for supporters, and challengers as we have just witnessed what will come to be one of the biggest moments of American history. This will be one of the moments our children will study in schools, a moment where we can look back and say that the youth of America refuses to be deemed apathetic, refuses to let the world happen to them, and refuses not to take the future, OUR future into our own hands. Last night, WE TOOK OUR COUNTRY BACK. Last night we proved to the world that change is feasible, that we are ready to take on obstacles with open arms and start to patch up a wounded world, and that in the United States of America, anything really IS possible. Last night showed millions of young Americans that so desperately needed assurance, that the American dream was still one within reach.
