Goobs For Boobs: An Event To Save Lady Parts

Category: Events   Posted by:   on July 27th, 2010

We all know that I am a writer for antisteez. We all know that I interview people. That I blast opinions off like rockets, kids. That I spend my nights roaming around the 305, looking for the best parties and partying with the best of them. And that I lead with my wit and, for lack of a better and perhaps more-PC way of saying this…my tits.

Yes. We all know that my rack is a very prominent part of who I am.

What some people don’t know is that I, goobs, had a terrible breast cancer scare about two years ago.

And let me point out to you that when your doctor tells you that you have a lump in your lady parts and that there will be all sorts of tests and procedures and then he says the C-word, it’s scary.

CANCER. IN YOUR BREASTS.

I remember leaving my doctor’s office and turning to the first place that I knew I would find ease to my anxiety about potentially being a woman with breast cancer. Yes, I turned to GOOGLE, because when the going gets tough, goobs goes to google for answers. Here is what I learned and here is what scared the absolute BeJesus out of me:

  • Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.
  • According to the Center for Disease Control statistics released in 2006, 191,410 women are diagnosed with breast cancer a YEAR.
  • And according to the National Cancer Institute‘s statistics, 40,820 women die from breast cancer a YEAR.

Needless to say, I was frightened. I was lost. Quite frankly, I was freaking out, man. Big time. But, because Papa Dios and Jota Cristo look out for me, after a few tests my doctor told me that my lump was just a breast fibroid. His exact words to me were,”It’s just a fibroid. So you are okay. Don’t worry about it.” But you know what? I couldn’t NOT worry about it because all I could think about were the 191,140 women sitting in their doctors’ offices who hear the words, “You have breast cancer.” How horrible they must feel. How this disease eats women alive. How they have to lose their breasts to mastectomies. How women DIE of this disease EVERY DAY. People’s mothers, aunts, sisters, wives, cousins, friends and daughters…DYING. It moved me to action. I decided right then and there that breast cancer was NOT OKAY with me and that I would do whatever I could to help raise awareness and money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, because I was one of the lucky women who didn’t have this disease. Because I am a woman and I could not stand idly by while other women suffered.

And so, Goobs For Boobs was born.

What is Goobs for Boobs? Well, now in it’s second year, it’s a charity event hosted by myself and the wonderful folks at the Vagabond and (((SHAKE))) where we dance, drink and make merry all while raising money for breast cancer research. It’s a party with a purpose. It’s a way to do your part to stop breast cancer from affecting the women you love. It’s an opportunity for YOU to do battle with breast cancer and make a difference.

So, on behalf of all the women in the land…and their titties, I am inviting all of you to come out to Goobs For Boobs on Thursday, July 29th to the Vagabond and (((SHAKE))) for breast cancer research. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  There will be live performances by ALUKARD, YMF and a special guest appearance by Saheed. There will be amazing music with one of Miami’s most fire DJs, DJ Atrain. There will be goodie bags and cupcakes for you provided by antisteez.com and the pretty ladies of Superficial Sweets. And there will be a dunk tank in the garden where for a donation, you will be able to dunk Miami’s finest, including your favorite antisteez’er, ME! So please come out and get me wet and SAVE THE TITTIES!

Because together, WE can make breast cancer something that no woman EVER has to worry about again.

Beginning in their 20s, women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exam (BSE). Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found. For information on how to perform a BSE, click HERE.
