Raised by Broadway star Wanda Richert, coupled with her father’s influence in videography and production, she really didn’t know any life other than that of an artist’s.

At age 14, she dove into hip hop and started writing rhymes paired with soulful melodies. By the time that 2006 Ultra Music Festival rolled around, she realized that there was more to her music than heavy, dark booms and baps. Whether exploring Electro, Hip Hop, Dubstep, House, Drum and Bass, Candace wanted to do her part to bring music to life.

“Too many artists get discouraged and stop gripping down on their dreams. Or they let complications become a scapegoat to justify a stagnant progress. If you’re going to talk, do it while you’re walking. I had to start all over – more than once – but I couldn’t and wouldn’t let that keep me from moving forward! It’s a new chapter every moment!” Candace told us.

Candace threw herself into her music with gusto. Along the way she dabbled in music production and modeling. Her goal was to weave all her creative experiences into her music. She carried that same effort into creating Grey Area, a gallery she launched during Art Basel 2011.

“I want people to know that I see art in everything and that I live life based on that principle.” said Candace. “What I do with Grey Area is an extension of that, to share with whoever would like to be a part of it. Our mission statement says, ‘Our passion is to be a ‘playhouse’; a place people can go to experience a feeling of freedom and a sense of comfort to both peruse and express themselves with many different forms of ART, via painting, music, dance, film, fashion, design, sculpture, experimentalism, etc.’ But the whole reason why I did any of this in the first place was because I wanted to weave it with my music career.”

For Candace’s calendar photoshoot, we wanted to create photos that showed off her creativity and her  love for art. The Valentine’s Day concept we came up with was, I’ll Rip Your Fucking Heart Out, a series of photos that showed the different stages of love, from the first sparks of romance to the heart-wrenching moment of heartbreak.

Candace showed up at the shoot armed with an arsenal of vintage clothing compliments of her mother Wanda, a former belle of the stage. Styled by yours truly along with our resident makeup artist, Yarlen, we created looks for Candace that were a bit ingenue, temptress and heart-breaker.

And then there was that bloody beef heart. lol

When Candace came on set, we had an organic beef heart sitting in ice for the shoot. While some would flinch at the idea of holding on to a bloody animal heart during a photoshoot, (Candace avoids meat in her regular diet, opting to eat fish.) Candace’s initial reaction was to say,

That’s awesome. Do you want me to bite into it and chew it? I will totally put it in my mouth if you need me to.

That’s what she said…literally.

Beautiful and talented, Candace Meyer is one of the bright Miami lights that needs to shine. We are pleased to let her shine here.

We caught up Steven for a photoshoot Calvin Klein would have been proud of… except with more clothes on (sorry ladies!) Steven’s stylist Mariangel Robles kept the man looking catalog fresh with his own flavor. We explored his rough edges, dusted off his inner model and even made some Valentine’s out of the notes of heartbreak, Jameson in hand. How long have you been in Miami and what brought you here?

I’ve been in Miami for about 5 years, I moved here mainly for the culture and the opportunity.

My music is influenced by everything which helps it sound unique.

Coming from the Perverted Monks camp, Afu-Ra is most well known through his affiliation with the Gang Starr Foundation and Jeru the Damaja. Remember that song on Jeru’s The Sun Rises in the East album called “Mental Stamina”? That dope MC on there? Yeah… That’s Afu-Ra. That was his first major mention to the world. He made another appearance on Jeru’s second album Wrath of the Math, on the track “Physical Stamina”, in 1996. Afu’s debut single, “Whirlwind Thru Cities”, was released in 1998, reaching the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart. In 1999, he released his second single, “Defeat” b/w “Mortal Kombat”.

Dude is known around the Hiphop community as one of those dudes you just don’t fuck with. Not ONLY cause of his wicked wordplay and flow but because he’s pretty into Kung-Fu…. and Chess. Interesting, huh?

The Hostile Takeover Tour 2012 – 90 shows in 99 days – a hostile takeover indeed by a slew of emcees coming soon “to a girlfriend near you.” The most extensive, longest-running rap tour is making history with live appearances by Tech N9ne, Machine Gun Kelly, Krizz Kaliko, ¡Mayday!, Prozak and Stevie Stone.

It’s a highly personal tune. As I took it upon myself to moozy on over to Knowledge Medina’s Facebook page and see his status is “engaged,” I couldn’t help but think this man poured his soul into his verses and shared it with complete strangers. A personal story of commitment and an ode to good women, it expresses how the handsome men in our lives  sometimes act as if they don’t really care – but we stick by them because not-so-deep down, we know they do.

So many bands, so little time, not enough me to go around! Today we are introducing you to Minimal - an eclectic and versatile mix of indie and alternative rock with electronic flirtations embodied in drum machines, sequencers and samplers, made extra special by adding Spanish lyrics on top.

Our respected friends at the Miami New Times described them as: “the tastiest bitter-sweet candy for fans of wall-flower angst electropop,” and you know we love angst – especially when it comes with a side of electropop … the fizzles make us giggle.

Minimal has been pounding pavements and generating gigs since the good old days way back in 2006.  Three albums deep, their debut: “Fotos Cartas Y Un Puñal,” got them recognition as Best New Band in Batanga.com.

The single “El Cubo” earned radio play on alternative stations across this great country and even MTV Tr3s aired the video. The second single, “No Sonar,” rotated on Fuel TV and was later released via Minimal’s MySpace profile, landing them a feature mention on MySpace Latino in April 2008 – making it a double-run for these guys in their first inning on the indie music league.

At this point, you’ve got to be high on something wicked not take advantage of your debut’s momentum, which is why 2009 ushered in their sophomore release: “Hermoso Caos.” Literal translation: “Gorgeous Chaos.” Very fitting given the great run they had experienced.  Released on their YouTube channel, Minimal performed live all four tracks under the surveillance of 15 digital cameras.

Here’s where they won us over:

For the “Hermoso Caos” promotional tour, Minimal created a Blue Space Man that accompanied the group to shows and interviews. The character was featured on a variety of graffiti and wheat-pasting pieces throughout the country, and was used as the main character on the very cool “Satelite” video. On an internationally televised stunt in 2010, the Blue Space Man and Minimal sneaked past security at the MTV Latin America Video Music Awards, walking through the event’s red carpet, and into the backstage area.

High five, Minimal. High-freaking-five, indeed.

Now in all viable corners of the Internet you can find Minimal’s third and most recent endeavor: “Antibalas Corazon.” The self-produced six track EP was mixed by Sebastian Krys, who is a five-time Grammy Award winner but who’s counting, and Dan Escauriza of the renowned Chicago IV Lab Studios.

“Antibalaz Corazon“ is the band’s most energetic album to date, incorporating fast paced tempos and a mountain of textures through the use of synths, drum machines, samplers and the traditional rock elements that characterize the band’s sound.

CYNE formed in the summer of 2001, within the longtime hardcore/punk/d.i.y. tradition of Gainesville and collectively embrace a stylistic range that includes everything from prog to pop to metal. These cultural informers collided with CYNE’s practice of sampling and live instrumentation to create music that is the cumulative representation of both the personal and the political.

CYNE (“Cultivating Your New Experience”) has collaborated with artists from around the world, including Nujabes, whose solo projects have featured Cise Star and Akin, Four Tet, who produced several remixes for and toured with them in 2005 and a ton of our homeys from the 305 like Seven Star, Manuvers and Soarse Spoken. The group’s debut release was a hard-hitting 12” entitled ‘African Elephants’ . Since then, CYNE has released a number of EPs, singles, and two critically well-received albums.
