As much as Guilletine and my self are fans of instrumentals, I’m totally amazed that Damu The Fudgemunk took this long to shine light on. We’re constantly listening and learning just to bring all of you some of the best Hiphop you’ve probably never heard and trust me when I say… this might just be one of those artists.

A master at the SP-1200, Damu the Fudgemunk is also a student to some of his (and your) idols such as Pete Rock, Grap Luva and even DJ Premier. And you will definitely get a feel for that when you hear the love this man incorporates on his drum patterns and perfectly cut samples. You might even bump in to a tune or two you had no idea he produced.

I recently talked to REBEL’s frontman Micke and asked him how the band’s new release, Locations, was coming along. Micke said that he was excited and extremely proud of their work. I honestly didn’t expect anything less from REBEL.

But then I got worried when he said that this project’s sound was more mature. When I hear the word “mature” used to describe a band’s sound, I tend to kind of freak out. In my mind, when a band says their sound is mature it means that they sound like R.E.M and I don’t like R.E.M. That’s like saying you once sounded like Nirvana and went from In Utero to sounding like some prepped-out shit.

Thankfully, REBEL’s upcoming EP doesn’t sound anything like R.E.M.

In fact, I think that everything on Locations is the product of things just falling into place perfectly.

If you have ever gone to a REBEL show, you’ll know that there’s no standing still whatsoever. Their music is very balls-to-the-wall. Truthfully, I love electronic rock and I think that REBEL really represents electronic rock more than most bands in Miami.

That was, of course, until I heard Locations.

I was invited to hear Locations at Casa De REBEL. Right away I noticed a lot of differences from their second EP, INTRCPTR. Of course most bands try to not repeat the sound of their previous album, but REBEL made a smart move here instead. While everything you heard previously from this band including INTRCPTR was more punk rock with some electronic sequences, Locations is a well-balanced mix between the two.

While most of the tracks on this EP may have lost their punk rock speed, they gained a much more refined and rich sound with more sequences and thought-provoking sections. Sure, REBEL’s music is still catchy and you can dance to it, but it’s not as high-tempoed as their previous stuff. It still sounds like a party, but more like the type of party that captivates your ears.

Let’s put it this way, if REBEL once sounded like a faster punk rock version of Muse, now they sound like Depeche Mode with extra cojones.

It’s hard for me to review their EP because while I try hard to listen to it like a fan, my production brain takes over. The EP is well-produced, but not over-produced and what I love about the sound in general is the dirt! The sounds on Locations are filthy and layered to leave the headroom feeling full. The quality of Micke’s vocals are farther improved in this EP as well. The drums on this album are layered to every angle of it’s muscles and bones…if that makes any sense. The layering between electronic and rock drums leaves you wondering if they used a drum machine or a live kit. The big secret is that they used BOTH.

In a world where indie rock is the new pop of the rock scene, it’s refreshing to hear REBEL. Locations is a better EP than their previous work, and while the sound is different, it’s a good different. My only concern when listening to Locations was wondering how REBEL would ever manage to pull off all of the production on this EP during a live show.

I guess we’ll just have to see for ourselves during their EP Release Tour. It starts in Ft Lauderdale at the Green Room (5/19), then stops at the Vagabond (5/25), Respectables (5/26) and the New World Brewery (6/1) in Tampa.

I highly encourage people who want to hear something new and unsaturated to pick up Locations. It’s worth it.

I prefer the indies over mainstream any day of the week; the problem is the technology available to us is a double edged sword. Talented independents such as Young Circles, ¡MayDay!, The CornerStoners et al, have a plethora of resources right at their fingertips to take their craft to the next level. The downside? They’re competing with trash. Amateurs and impulsive, frivolous individuals who decided 20 minutes ago they want to make music are also using these tools. The result:

<a href="

This week we present False Flags – comprised of Alfred von Blume, Howard Melnick, Will Roman, and Michael Suede; individuals who were former collaborators or band mates at some point in time. They found their unique combination of experience and expressionism marked by the use of atonality and complex, unconventional rhythm, melody, and form, echoed each other fluidly. At the present, the group is set on finalizing their live set and recording an EP for performance dates later this year around South Florida.

False Flags has been playing together since last Summer and are a decent newbie. Their debut EP has a slated release for mid Summer/early Fall

On May 19 they will be on live at Midnight at Kill Your Idol – no cover.
Considering we just lost one of the legends last week (R.I.P. MCA), DJ Guilletine and Antisteez decided to pay homage to one of the most epic crews to ever touch the Hiphop scene. One of our past writers is the biggest Beastie Boy fans in existence (I’ll fight whoever says different) and we asked him to pick out the songs that best described The Beastie Boys. And obviously DJ Guilletine made the magic happen with the tracklisting.

33 years making music, The Beastie Boys released a total of eleven albums and twelve E.P.’s. since 1979. A total of 36 incredible music videos and a gang of epic concerts. Today we celebrate The Beastie Boys for introducing us to MCA, which was one of the founders of the crew.

Enjoy and Re-share!!

I’m actually looking forward to a few musical events that are happening this year. Some of the ones on this list hit closer to home than others. I’d also like to point out that this is an absolutely personal list and has nothing to do with my team at antisteez. And this list is not necessarily in any order. All those disclaimers said, let’s get on with it.

I’m GENUINELY excited about the fact that two of my favorite local bands are coming out with new releases. I won’t keep you guys in anticipation though. Here they are:

# 1 Amon Tobin Coming to The Fillmore: September 22, 2012

Hands down, I am beyond excited about this! Amon Tobin is probably one of the most innovative producers out there. I’ve been following his music since the beginning and he’s never failed me when it comes to experimentation in his albums like Foley.

Amon Tobin is actually a composer for one of The Splinter Cell games. If you appreciate really dope beat productions and you don’t know who Amon Tobin is, I highly recommend you check him out. It’s not hip-hop, it’s not necessarily downright electronic dance. It’s just pure ear candy, beat-making, genius music to bop your head to. One huge reason I’m even mentioning this in my Top 5, besides being a huge fan, is that Amon Tobin coming to Miami is a rare case.

#2 Explosions In The Sky Coming to The Grand Central: June 20, 2012

This is another wet dream come true. If you love the score of the TV show Friday Night Lights, then you already love Explosions in the Sky. You may ask yourself, why would I compare Explosions in the Sky to the score of Friday Night Lights? Simple…because they score the music for the TV show. Explosions in the Sky is an instrumental band or what most musical elitist nerds call post-rock. What you hear on the score to Friday Night Lights is basically what you hear on all their albums. It’s beautifully crafted daydreaming (or dreaming) music that will take you places in your head.

#3 Rebel’s 3rd EP Locations – Coming May 19, 2012

I’ll say it to anyone’s face, I don’t care who I write articles about, I don’t care who hears me say it…REBEL is one of my favorite local bands. I’m astonished to listen to what they’ve got in store for us this time. I hear it from Micke (front man of REBEL) that their sound has matured and I don’t mean matured where they sound like some lame ass R.E.M band. I mean matured where everything they do in their songs has a reason. I think people need to pay more attention to REBEL, especially if you love cross genres of electronic and rock. They’re kicking off a mini tour for the launch of their EP that goes from Ft Lauderdale to Tampa. You can check them on their EP release party on May 19th.

#4 TUSK’s Debut Tontine EP – Coming May 22, 2012

Bold statement #2 in this article article; I mentioned I’m excited about two of my favorite local bands releasing stuff this year and you guessed it… TUSK is one of them. I actually haven’t seen TUSK perform since 2010 and I’m not sure how they sound now, but let’s just say they’re a rock band that can say fuck the guitar and drive you musically insane…in a good way. The last time I saw TUSK they were made up of a saxophone player, bassist, drummer with front man Brandon on the keys, synths, and vocals. Being that I was in a band with Brandon back in the day, It doesn’t surprise me that he would become one of the most entertaining front men in the local scene. Trust me, don’t miss their show on May 23rd. More information on that coming soon.

#5 Haochi Waves – Apparatus EP – Coming May 11, 2012

I loved them as Pretty Please and I love them now. Haochi Waves have trimmed themselves down to a three piece band and still take their art-rock genre to energetic heights. Be sure to join them at Churchill’s for their EP Release Party on May 11, 2012. I don’t know if I would compare them to other bands, but they definitely have a rough 90s sound. When I heard them live the other day, they sounded very raw and it reminded me of Nirvana’s In Utero with a Breeders art rock sound. I’m interested in what the EP is going to sound like. Between them, REBEL, and TUSK, I should have probably made this post a Top 3 Miami Locals piece about the month of May.

Let’s face it, it’s going to be a great month of local music for my ass.

The Bright Light Social Hour first gained attention in Austin from their incendiary live performances and innovative vision of rock and roll. Melding southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues and deep soul.

Their self-titled debut album and recent heavy touring have led to a swelling North American audience, growing critical acclaim and a sweep of six awards at the SXSW 2011 Austin Music Awards, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year.

After a handful of successful shows during SXSW 2012, one of which was at Auditorium Shores for a crowd of over 10,000, the band has hit the road for a North American tour with a recent three-show debut at Canadian Music Week. Now back in the US, the band will tour throughout the country, as well as hitting up a handful of festivals including Wakarusa, Bear Creek Music Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest and Bunbury Music Festival.

And we are all familiar with ArtOfficial – if not: ArtOfficial thrives on originality. It’s the quiet thrum that runs beneath every track and performance like a current, igniting and electrifying their sound. They tread their own path, eschewing the simple magic of beat machines and samples for the irreplaceable warmth of organic instrumentation, and a meticulous care for crafting music with soul.

Welcome back from under the rock, kid. You were missed.

You can catch them live while you sip your Coronas and yelp “Andale! Andale!” at Cinco de Bougie’s Block Party happening May 5. Cost is NONE, son! Free as flyer.

The Bougainvillea’s Tavern is located at 7221 SW 58 Avenue, Miami, 33143 and DJ Mikee D will be spinning in the living room. Click the pic for performance times!

While musicians, singers and artists give their all on stage there are plenty of people putting in work on their behalf. Our May calendar serves as an ode to the producers, mix engineers, light and sound, booking agents and managers who are often the unsung heroes of the music business. Not to say our talent this month is unsung… far from it. They’ve made themselves known in Miami and then some. The pair known as Miami Beat Wave started off classmates and ended up making music from hip hop to electronic for a few names you might recognize… Download their calendar as a reminder that hard work looks good in suit.

We asked the guys a couple of questions about their daily experiences as well as at their experience at the shoot. Be sure to take a look at some of the photos from our calendar photo shoot (scroll to the bottom of the page) which took place in one of Miami’s most iconic locations – Maximo Gomez Park or more endearingly known as Domino Park. A place where Little Havana wakes up early for their seat at the domino table. A place where it’s all fun and games until someone breaks the unspoken rules of the park.

1) In 140 characters or less describe Miami Beat Wave

Miami Beat Wave is a team of producers who have created music for artists such as Rick Ross, Dead Prez, N.O.R.E., Skyzoo, Locos Por Juana, Guilty Simpson, Ghostwridah, !MAYDAY!, Ras Kass, Layne Harper etc…

2) You guys are the first calendar models to appear as a pair, do you bicker like a old married couple in the studio?

Brandan:

Not frequently, but sometimes life can be stressful and just like any other job your partner can get on your nerves. We always joke about it later though. We are family.

3) Chip proved at the shoot his Spanish beats Brandan’s, describe your backgrounds and how Miami has influenced who you are and what you do.

Chip:

I’m from North Carolina, so coming here was culture shock, but really I came because I wanted to embrace all the culture our world has to offer. It’s influenced me, and the music I make, heavily. Plus, learning Spanish is kind of important to communicate in a lot of situations here in Miami. Working in this city gives you an extra focus on mainstream music, be it hip hop or dance music, or even dubstep, because you’re working to stay ahead of what’s going on right now.

Brandan:

Even though I was born and raised in Miami and I’m half Cuban, speaking Spanish is tougher for me than understanding it. Growing up in Miami influenced me in every way from the different cultures to the unique street art found all over our city. Miami is so saturated with artist it feels like you have to work constantly to stay ahead of the game. On the other hand there are a number of extremely talented artists out here who we feed back and forth from and make amazing collaborations with.

4) Share your favorite, funniest and “blooper” moments from the photo shoot.

Chip:

There was a classic old Cuban viejo there that said he would give me $20 if I could name a state he didn’t know the capital of, I tried and of course he knew more than I did. Then he came back and made the same deal about knowing the state any president was born in, and again I couldn’t get the $20…

Brandan:

The old viejo was classic! I also enjoyed chilling in the cigar shop and watching them hand make all the fine cigars.

5) How did it feel to go from “behind the scenes” to in front of the camera? Did it come natural or was it challenging?

Brandan:

We have both been in front of the camera whether it be in music videos or behind the scenes footage so we are almost used to it. Greg and Caro were very on point with their vision and which direction the shoot should go in, this made it very comfortable and easy.

If there was one thing that Diddy taught us it’s that it takes a lot of work behind-the-scenes to make a band into THE band of the moment. While talent and good looks will get a group of musicians far, real success is in the details. Those details are often handled by those who are not in the spotlight, but rather, making sure that the spotlight is just bright enough, pointed in the right direction and showcasing the talent the right way. It’s attention to detail that turns today’s local band into tomorrow’s national artists. While musicians make music, the fate of their musical careers and their jump to that next level is in the hands of someone who juggles all those details without breaking a sweat. Enter Nina Arce, the woman poised to take local Miami crooners Dangerflow to that next level.

Nina wears many hats as a successful makeup artist and (as of this shoot) a sometimes model. But where she wears the pants is as the Marketing and Public Relations Director for Dangerflow. She’s an integral part of the band’s success, handling their social media, website, merchandising and styling for photo and video shoots. She is not just another pretty face. In fact, she’s the one making sure that the boys in the band look pretty at all times.

When it comes to the music business, Nina is all business and that’s why we wanted to pay homage to her this month…because this month is about those who toil behind-the-scenes to help musicians make the scene.

We caught up with Nina for our shoot on Miami’s famous Calle Ocho and 15th Avenue, near famed Maximo Gomez/Domino Park. We knew we wanted to capture the essence of Miami’s deep Latin roots and thanks to a twist of fate, we were able to do that in the courtyard of the incredible Cuba Ocho Art and Research Center. (That twist of fate being the nice gentlemen who let us in for $10 and then gave us roses and fish made from palm fronds. lol)

What transpired at the shoot was a work of art. Nina (who did her own makeup for the shoot) looked like she belonged in 1920′s Havana. In fact, we are pretty sure that she gave a few of the older domino players heart palpitations. A pretty girl in a linen dress with a flower in her hair? Better than cafecito to perk up the spirits.

Nina gave us a little insight on who she is, which we will share with you now. We advise you to keep an eye on her…that is, if you can. She might be front and center for this calendar, but this lady’s real kingdom is behind-the-scenes, where you will find her paying attention to all the details.

Miami is very diverse and is continually growing, leaving a lot of potential for people in the
you gotta be careful.

I was very irresponsible for not letting you guys know this a lot earlier, but time to me is like this wormhole where every day is the same. Anyways, if you guys were ever into the industrial scene (whatever is left of it), then you guys should know about phoenix/NEBULIN (Yes, that’s how it’s spelled so no calling the grammar police on me…). These guys have been around for a bit now and I heard of them when they were using Propellerheads Reason as their drummer (or keyboardist) during the MySpace days.

Well, Antisteez would like to congratulate phoenix/NEBULIN for ranking #2 on Amazon.com’s Best Sellers in Goth and Industrial just a few hours after their release of Vitae.

Here’s a statement from their drummer Armando Doval:

“Vitae is a project that has taken us over four years to complete, It is based on several ideas, thoughts and production concepts we wanted to try in the studio. The result could very well be categorized as an (Industrial / Pop) Album.

We wanted to focus more on the vocal production on this album more than ever. Phoenix is very influenced by Def Leppard and we wanted to create similar vocal harmonies in that (Mutt Lange) style.

Most of the vocal harmonies that you hear in the songs are layered thick with over 70+ vocal tracks. We also got a very good overall guitar and drum sound on this record. It’s much better than we have in the past.

We took the time to properly produce these tracks as if each one was a single on its own. We are now looking forward to playing most of these songs in a live setting as we are preparing for some summer shows and festivals.”

Well there you have it and in case a lot of you are thinking, “Oh, no, not more Evanescence crap,” it’s actually not. There are plenty of ground-breaking, heavy, industrial-like beats with metal elements behind them and vice versa on this album. Also, don’t mistake industrial and goth because there’s actually a difference. Just think of Goth as vampires, dark castles, etc., and industrial as cyborgs eating nails and spitting them in your face. Oh, while there are serial killers chasing you and the world’s going to end because of The Matrix. Yeah, that’s it.

Below is the album cover along with the link to where YOU can purchase the album. Again, Antisteez salutes you guys.

They’ve also been having some fun following around their skaters in Miami with their arsenal of tech toys. GoPro, anyone? In their latest skate video entitled “Cafe con Leche” there isn’t any coffee nor milk, but plenty of air to catch and public property to brand with their boards.

The video was filmed by Joel Garcia aka “Miami Filmer Guy” and features the Out of Hand Skateboards team: Lester Cepero, Guiri Reyes, Desmund White and Roman Friday.

All sorts of crews and record labels in Hiphop by 1997. I think this is the year that money REALLY started to accumulate. Bad Boy, Death Row, multi-million dollar empires filled with the music that will be remembered forever. Tupac passed away late ’96 and Biggie passed away early this year, so I’m guessing Hiphop felt that they needed to step it up and come super strong. Grab the formulas they had discovered from Big and Pac and made it their own. This is how the legends were produced.

So, I leave you with the seventh mix Guilletine and Antisteez brings you, to showcase the “Golden Years of Hiphop”. Hopefully you all show as much love as you have for the past ones.

Enjoy and Re-share!!

I’m particularly picky about what music on the local scene I listen to and that’s not to say that I’m complete snob, but it’s been awhile since I heard a local rock band that truly blew me away. I’m not saying Miami music sucks (Trust me, it’s FAAARRRRR from that.), I’m just saying I’m very picky about what I want to write about. And I have strange taste in music in general.

However, I was directed to check out Planelifter and listen to their EP “As You Stand Still” on BandCamp, so I did. I’ll be honest, at first I was really busy doing something and I listened for only a few seconds and really didn’t dig it. A couple of days later, I realized that when I listen to music I have to REALLY pay attention and felt I didn’t give these cats a fair shot (My bad, dudes.).

So, because I’m honest and a moralistic person, I decided to READ about them first. All I read was “tags: alternative fuzzy rock Miami” and I was interested! I gave their EP a second go and now I think that Planelifter is like the 90s alternative stuff before bands like Bush started coming around. I think that is a very good thing.

And they’re not joking when they talk about having that fuzz in their sound. I thought to myself, “Fuck! These guys must have like three guitars with all those layers of guitars.” Wrong! Planelifter is a three-piece band and a dope one at that! I understand if you kids don’t know what a good three-piece rock band is, it’s not your fault. Your parents had sex a little too late and the early 90s passed you by.

Planelifter has a catchy, energetic feel while completely smothering you in layers of noise and of course, fuzz. I was very impressed with the emphasis on rocking out. I honestly didn’t even care about the lyrics too much because in most of their songs they’re buried in all that rocking out they do. Some people might not like that, but I do.Sometimes it’s not about what you say, it’s about what you play.

I can only imagine what these dudes sound like live and if they’re constantly plugged into batteries when they perform. I don’t know, but if you’re curious, these dudes are playing at Churchill’s this Friday April 27 for only 5 bucks along with Hit Play, Askultura, J. Valor Band, and the Riot Agents.
