Album Review: BUN B Trill OG reviews music Bun B Trill OG Cover 300x300When you think of hip-hop in the south you come across names like 3 6 Mafia, 8ball & MJG, The Geto Boys, Cash Money Millionaires, Master P and of course U.G.K. The surviving member of the seminal group known as “The UnderGround Kingz” Bun B released “Trill OG” his third solo studio album. This album concludes Bun B’s “Trill” series. Rap-A-Lot Records, which has done so much for the hip-hop movement in the south, released the full length feature in early August.

Ever since my friend hooked me up with U.G.K.’s “Ridin Dirty” I have been a fan of Bun B and Pimp C. Bun B’s sysurp flow and deep tone adds the perfect touch to the chopped & screwed, slow grinding sound of the south. This whole year I’ve heard Bun B featured on a slew of tracks and was very excited to hear the new material on “Trill OG”. Come with me as I put the top down, slow down the BPM’s and start tippin’ & swangin’.

1. Chuuch!!! feat. J Prince – This funky intro sets up for the dominant organ melody that creeps in. Throughout the whole song Bun B pats himself on the back for still being on top of his game, which he righteously deserves. Tabernacle!

2. Trillionaire feat. T-Pain – Five seconds into the song and I can already tell it’s going to annoy me. This was one of the first singles released. Radio probably played this a lot, although I wouldn’t be able to tell you because I don’t listen to radio.Bun B’s verses make the song tolerable. T-Pain, please stop with the auto-tune and develop some actual talent.

3. Just Like That feat. Young Jeezy – Yet another recognizable radio hit. These type of songs all sound the same to me. Bun B of course outshines Jeezy’s crybaby delivery. I really don’t see the need for a heavyweight to be sharing the ring with an amateur/rookie. Don’t really care for this one.

4. Put It Down feat. Drake - This has that classic UGK sound blending well with Drake’s new age singing. Surprisingly Bun B and Drake sound great together and actually steer the album in a better direction. I’m really feeling this one. Definite gem on the album.

5. Right Now feat. Pimp C, 2Pac, Trey Songz -Just look at who is on this track! They use Pimp C’s verse from the 2000′s and 2Pac’s verse is from the 90′s. All the MC’s drop hilarious sexual escapades while Trey Songz laces the track with his velvet voice. This is my favorite track on the album. Stays on repeat.

6. That’s a Song(Skit)- Album Filler. For me, if you’re gonna have a skit make it funny.

7. Countin’ Money feat. Yo Gotti, Gucci Mane – Seems that I really dislike any song featuring now-a-day rappers. There is no imagination to this song. Typical topic and beat. The cash counting machine makes the song extra corny. SKIP!

8. Speakeasy feat. Twista -I really like this one. The beat is very refreshing and forces Bun B to adapt to the rhythm, but he pulls it off like the veteran he is. Twista is a lyrical tornado and compliments Bun B very well. Stand out track from the album.

9. Lights, Camera, Action -This is the first track on the album that Bun B comes out solo. As he’s shown in the past, he can stand alone and deliver a great track. Steve Below is the producer on this one and does a great job with the production. The song segways perfectly into the next keeping the tone of the album up.

10. I Git Down 4 Mine -Bun B knocks out the competition with this one. He makes it known why he’s been in the game 15 years plus and still dominating. The only thing I can do without is the constant repeating of the last word on every bar.

11. Snow Money -Money, money, money. The song is alright but I get bored of it because of the topic. The beat is in typical south fashion making you shrug your shoulders and wave your diamond piece chain. Sounds like album filler.

12. Ridin Slow feat. Slim Thug -Damn, I’ve been waiting for this one. This is that perfect jam to put in your car. It has that UGK sound we know and love. I don’t mind Slim Thug on tracks like this. His heavy flow rides perfect with the beat. The male vocalist adds flavor with his R&B harmonies.

13. Let Em’ Know -WOW! I miss Gangstarr! Premier hooks Bun B up with a great beat for him to lay some sweet verses on. The track consists of classic Premo cuts and scratches. This was a surprise when I heard it and it is mos definitely a classic on the album. Repeat!

14. Listen(skit) - Shout out to PIMP C. Rest In Beats.

15. All a Dream feat. Letoya Luckett -This is the feel good, have hope track on the album. Very smart to use the sample “it was all a dream” from the late Notorious B.I.G.. Female vocalist Letoya Luckett pushes her vocal chords to the max in this one giving it a great soulful sound.

16. It’s Been A Pleasure feat. Drake - Great way to end the album. Drake was lucky enough to come out multiple times on the album. As the curtain closes on the “Trill OG”, both Drake and Bun B say farewell in a respectable way. Once again they have made a certified head banger for the album. Repeat!

The Source Hip Hop Magazine gave this album 5 mics. They haven’t done that in about 5 years. I am going to have to disagree though. As a whole it is a solid album, but there were some tracks that I wasn’t really feeling. For me a 5 mic album doesn’t even know a skip button exists.

I’ll probably take out the radio singles I don’t care for and make my own version, but for all you radio-land people get this album! You’ll love the club beats, the talk of money, hoes and clothes. Not to mention the easy to understand lyrics.
