Paint It Black–A Chat With Black Bobby

Category: Music   Posted by:   on October 5th, 2010

If you didn’t know already, (You really should know already, considering we already told you once.) round these parts we happen to think that Black Bobby is a big deal. He is the kind of MC whose rhymes will make you think, they will make you move…hell, they may make you join the movement. What movement? The million-man march to a new era where music feeds the mind and the soul. You see, Black Bobby (AKA Larry Harris Jr.) has a lot to say, but unlike most MCs who have a lot to say about nothing in particular, he spits rhymes for the thinking man. Intelligent and unapologetic about it, Black Bobby is not trying to dumb down the masses by promoting your typical gutter-snipe music. He isn’t telling you about the grimy hustle. He isn’t talking about bitches and ho’s. In fact, while some MCs tout being straight outta Compton, Black Bobby is straight outta Harvard. That’s right, Harvard. And while he could have pursued a career in politics and been that suit-and-tie mother’effer selling pipe dreams for votes, he decided to launch his own record label, SQUARE BIZ and push a positive message to the masses.

Now, don’t you go painting Black Bobby into the same box as al those other cracker-jack rappers. (We know you Hip-Hop cynics and snobs would love nothing more than to say that just because the man is educated that he is throwing down soft-serve rhymes like Mr. Men In Black, Will Smith. This is NOT the case.) Although he isn’t spitting flow about splittin’ people, his production is on-point, his delivery is sick and his music will make your head bob. His sound is reminiscent of Common and his beats have a De La and ATCQ feeling to them. And although WE know he is doing big thangs and that the sky is the limit for this talented MC, one of the coolest things about dude is his approachability. There is no pretentious flossing here. Oh, no. But like we said, we already told you once that Black Bobby was the truth.

With two mixtapes (Phat Kid Tendencies and Negro Dialect) under his belt and another on the way, (Presidential Shit will be released on Nov. 19 at Sweat Records, so don’t sleep!) Black Bobby is poised to bring the lyric-driven Hip-Hop of the 90′s back to life in the 305. Check out what the man had to say when he sat down with me at Sweat Records to chit chat about where he comes from, what he is up to and where he is going.
