Top 5 Half-time Jams 2011 with Migue Fernandez of REBEL

Category: Music   Posted by:   on July 20th, 2011

We’re halfway through 2011 everybody and whether you have fallen in love with new songs or still stuck on your old favorite jams, I’m usually very curious as to what people are listening to now a days. To be honest though, I don’t give a shit what are our readers are listening to… I’m kidding, but if I had to go around to all of our readers and list what they’re currently listening to on repeat, we’ll just crash our servers and I would have to quit everything else in life. So in order for me to avoid all that I decided to narrow down the list and just ask our fellow local acts what they are currently listening to. This may actually be an opinion I care more about than most other people out there, I’m KINDA kidding, but it’s always nice to know what the people rocking our local venues are listening to at the moment. Now remember not everyone is listening to new releases these days, but I’m certain this tiny series will allow you readers to enter the musical mind of our local music figures. So we’ll be going member by member to see what they are all about when listening to their top 5 jams on repeat right now.

Today we have Migue Fernandez of REBEL. The charismatic lead singer/guitarist is the only original member left in the band that originated from the Dominican Republic. Throughout the line-up changes, the band has trimmed down to a power trio. When REBEL plays live, the line between their recorded music and live performances, blur. I totally dig a lot of Migue’s taste in music especially since his early influences bring me back to some of my early influences as well. Check out more about this electronic rock power trio.

Now, let’s cut to the chase!

Migue, what are your current top 5 jams?

#1 “It’s No Good” by Depeche Mode

Im a big fan of melodies. Depeche Mode carries them across on most of their songs but It’s No Good tends to wrap me under its glossy sound everytime.

#2. “New Year’s Day” by U2

I get goosebumps with this piece. It is a song that takes me through a time I never got to experience on a personal level (I’ve just probably turned 1 when it first came out). With this song I get the luxury of time traveling.

#3. “Everybody Wants to Rule the World ” by Tears for Fears

I heard it for the first time at the end of the movie “Real Genius” around ’87. Fell instantly in love with it. This is the song I wish I would’ve written. It’s basically a song about the human race in modern times and it’s natural instinct to be at the top without thinking about the misery this may cause to your future.

#4. “Regret” by New Order

Oh those nostalgic notes. I love to go down memory lane. I do it quite a lot to be honest. Everything it meant and everything I did which makes me who I am today. Although this song doesn’t talk about that in specific it still causes that effect in me. That is the magic beneath a song: It takes a meaning of its own through all individuals. This one evokes just that.

#5. “Higher Than the Sun”” by Primal Scream

Listen to this song. It’s so sincere. Maybe cause Bobby was probably high at the time he wrote it. But sincerity is all over it. I absolutely love it.
